Here you go folks, my round-up of the most anticipated films for the Summer of 2013 (at least the films I plan to watch :p)
All posts have a line or two of my favorite quotes from the trailer, followed by a link to the trailer, and a short description..and the films are posted in order of release from earliest in the summer to latest…enjoy!
Iron Man 3
Tony Stark: “We Do Need Back-Up”
Rhodey: “That’s Your Department”
C’mon, who else is totally excited for Iron Man 3 this weekend!? Well, US residents at least; UK and other parts of the world opened IM3 to a staggering $195 million opening weekend! Great Job Nerds of Europe!! IM3 is one of the few sequels in a trilogy that continues to pack a punch and put on a fantastic performance! How do I know if I haven’t seen it yet? Well, I just know. And you should know too. Europe already knows, just look at the numbers and ratings! Plus, we will finally see more suits than just ‘Iron Man’ and ‘War Machine/Iron Patriot’ in action…like dozens of more armored troops!
The only disappointment is knowing Robert Downey Jr. is (for now) not returning for any future Marvel films D: But, let us revel in the moment and enjoy while we have him!
The Great Gatsby
“Gatsby, he had a grand vision for his life since he was a boy”
The Great Gatsby; I quite enjoyed the book, mourned over the original film, but am slowly ringing back up to anticipation for the revamped film. Why? Well for one, Leonardo Di’Caprio. Leo is fanatical in any film, one of the best actors we have had the chance to watch over and over again. He is almost like Johnny Depp, fitting any role he is given. Second, Tobey Maguire. Why? After SpiderMan, the two sequels were a disappointment. Plus, who could hate Tobey. This film looks exciting, filled with drama and suspense, with the touch of romance and thrill.
Fast and Furious 6
“Uh, guys…THEY GOT A TANK”
The Fast and Furious series has been a hit or miss; first was good, second meh, third hell nah, fourth good again, and the last one, FastFive, has been my favorite so far. Fast and Furious 6, though, may pass up FastFive on my list as number one…but we have to wait and see!
Vin Diesel never fails in a Fast film, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is back asking for Dom’s help, and the rest of the crew gears up for another round. This time around, they’re hunting a ghost; Michelle Rodriguez is back! Where has she been? We just have to watch the movie to find out! Fast and Furious 6 also succeeds at bringing back the fast cars, hot girls, kickass fights, and now a tank? Yup, they got a tank!
The Hangover Part III
“I can think of so many people, I would rather have died first…like my mother.”
We all thought The Hangover 2 was going to be a waste, another cheap copy-cat sequel, right? And we all thought it would be dull and the same senseless humor as the first film, right? But, we all went to see the film, right? RIGHT! So, we are all going to see The Hangover Part III, right? RIGHT!
“This is Earth; Everything has evolved to kill you”
Will Smith and Jaden Smith return as the father and son duo we all love to see. The best part, they reprise their father-son role not only in real life, but in the film as well. This pair was so well executed in The Pursuit of Happyness that I am certain it will be even better for After Earth. This film gives us a look at an older Jaden, who plays the smart but reckless lost son of a commander in what seems to be a futuristic military or government. The two are stranded on Earth and with the guidance of his father, the two fight their way to survival.
This Is The End
“Cus the Mayans said the world is supposed to end this week..have you ever met a fuckin Mayan?”
Two simple reasons why this film is going to be hilariously fantastic:
1) This seems like true comedy spinoff of “end of the world” films
2) James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogan, Jay Baruchel, Danny Mcbride, Craig Robinson, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, Jason Segel, David Krumholtz, Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling, Martin Starr, Kevin Hart, Rihanna, (wait scratch Rihanna) Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aziz Ansari, Backstreet Boys
Man Of Steel
“What if a child aspired to something greater?”
“In time, they will join you in the sun.”
After the Superman Returns disappointment with sub par fighting and super punching by Superman, Man of Steel is brought to us by Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan; aren’t those two names just music to our geek ears? With the success of The Dark Knight Trilogy by Nolan, and 300 by Snyder, Man of Steel will truly pack a super-punch. Henry Cavill seems to put on a spectacular performance as the Man of Steel, and this film brings us back to the roots of Superman. From the end of his home, to the secret life raised by his adoptive parents, to the humble beginnings of one who would become Superman…plus we learn from the trailer the ‘S’ stands for ‘hope’. Hope is all we needed for Superman to return to the big screen and here he is!
World War Z
“Is there anything left out there?”
What is making World War Z look so exciting and badass? Well this is one of the few films or Zombie-Related media that strays from the usual story line; in a sense. As The Walking Dead has created a cult, with the dramatic story line, endless obstacles, numerous Walkers, and continuous excitement, World War Z seems to accomplish something similar. As a family lives happily together, the father, Brad Pitt, is on the move to fight these zombies. but these zombies are hoards of undead bodies hurling past one another to eat living flesh, or so it seems. Consuming millions at a time, this new film virus spreads faster than we have seen in other films. I Am Legend with Will Smith, has been the only other zombie film worth watching when you know it will be more than just a zombie virus outbreak sweeping the planet. World War Z is what the title says, a World War of Zombies.
“Just wait hot-shot, I’m gonna scare circles around you”
Here it is folks! What we all have been waiting for, (at least those people like us who were about 8 or 9 when we first saw Monsters Inc.) Monsters University is finally here! Ironic that the time period is when we are all in college now? This prequel sure knew when to get released! I personally am very excited and anticipating this to be a great film, attending college now, it will be great to see what Disney-Pixar does to interpret the college life for monsters! Looks like another fun, comedy filled, loved-by-kids and now loved-by-adults Disney film!
The Lone Ranger
“If we ride together, we ride for Justice.”
“Justice is what I seek.”
Disney is at it again! Bringing back Johnny Depp for yet another amazing feature. Disney has done magic with the wonders of Pirates of the Caribbean series, and now they have gone Western, bringing back to life The Lone Ranger! Though I am not quite old enough to have caught the original Lone Ranger, the new film does not seem to disappoint by the looks of the trailers. I see it resembling much of the Pirates films, especially with Depp reprising one of the main roles of a film.
Despicable Me 2
“You know how a villain thinks, that’s why we brought you here.”
The kids have grown up just a bit, and a new agency has stepped in to ask for Gru’s assistance. And Gru is back in the game with cool cars, gadgets, and weapons to save the world! Steve Carell is back as criminal master mind turned adoptive parent, turned somewhat good guy to save the world! With the support of his three youngins, his new gear, and the minions, (don’t we all love those little guys?) Despicable Me 2 hopes to have a compelling storyline and comedy feature as did the frst film.
“Today we are canceling the apocalypse!”
Guillermo Del Toro packs a monstrous punch in his new film, Pacific Rim. With the work of nations around the globe, Gypsy Danger (U.S.) Crimson Typhoon (China) Striker Eureka (Australia) Cherno Alpha (Russia) and Coyote Tango (Japan) these “Jaegers” as they are called, are massive robotic machines controlled by two humans, synced together at a home base, to fight the monsters unleashed from beneath the seas. How did they get to Earth? Through an opened portal? Were they living in Earth’s Core and found a crack? However may be, they are terrorizing and destroying the world, it is up to these men and women to build and fight the Jaegers against these beasts. I see it as a Real Steel and Godzilla mashup or combo, which Guillermo Del Toro has done a marvelous job to create. the apocalypse doesn’t always appear as zombies or volcanoes or asteroids; sometimes it comes in the form of gigantic monsters. We just have a way to fight it this time.
“You haven’t killed anybody in months!”
Bruce Willis brought us Red as a couple of old guys and gals fighting against our own government after they tried to kill former agents in retirement. Funny how this seems to happen in real life, no? Back to the movie…Frank Moses is at the run from more federal companies hunting him down, as the top hit on any list. Newer hitman are after him, old partners are trying to kill him, and now a new fling returns, played by the gorgeous Catherine Zeta-Jones. By the trailer alone, this plays along the lines of the first film, and they introduce us to the 2014 Corvette Stingray! (Did you catch it? Blue sports car near the end). Bruce Willis has kicked ass in Red, The Expendables, The Expendables 2, G.I. Joe and A Good Day to Die Hard…now he is back for Red 2! oh and did you hear about The Expendables 3? ya, they kick more ass the older they get.
“It’s an honor to meet The Wolverine.”
“That’s not who I am anymore.”
Mutants and Ninjas? No..YES. Hugh Jackman returns as The Wolverine, another adventure along the timeline of The Wolverine before joining the X-Men. It seems Wolverine is in another challenge with his mutant powers; from the first film, we saw how he gained the knowledge of his mutation at a young age, and later taking in adamantium to embody endless strength and healing powers. Now Logan is stepping away from his Wolverine title, but at a cost, by losing his healing. Is this what he wanted? Did he do this to himself? The Wolverine is bringing back another exciting story from the Marvel and X-Men universe!
“I need to get to Elysium.”
The director of District 9 comes back with another tale of poverty and destruction with Elysium. Matt Damon comes from his long, (and might I add, utterly eceptional work, better than the new actor, Jeremy Renner) from the Bourne Series, to give us his work for Elysium. Earth is a lost soul, with sickness, war, death, poverty running through every household, the rich have decided to create their own life away from the planet. Jodie Foster plays the “head honcho” of this rich and lavish life. But some people left on Earth try all they can to reach Elysium, and develop a technology to suit up and fight the governing body. Similar to District 9, a story of the secluded fighting for freedom.
“No matter what happens. . .No matter what they tell you. . .Don’t let em take these chains off me.”
Sometimes it takes more than one film for a story to be a huge hit. The Chronicles of Riddick was a great movie, I enjoyed almost every aspect of it, and would rate it 8/10. The box office would not give it that well of a rating..barely earning over the budget, the first Riddick film was a disappointment to movie goers. Riddick returns this summer for another hit by Vin Diesel, reprising his role as Riddick of course. The :20 second teaser give us just a glimpse of the new film, even less. Stating that no one should remove the chains, gives us quite the mystery behind the new film.
